Improving your SAP Analytics Cloud Stories Performance and Usability
This was an SAP webcast last week with Christina Obry and Tunir Kapil

The slides are available here
Figure 2: Source: SAP
Difficulty telling when objects are loading
Difficulty navigating large hierarchies; dropdown menu is small, or when scroll members are truncated
Performance is important
Creating large volume can cause story to slow down
When expand page or story filter with a hierarchy can be slow
Common characteristics – multiple data models with a lot of model info – 40 or more measures/dimensions, large hierarchies
Now offer optimized view mode
Optimized view mode addresses usability issues, improves performance in scenarios
Figure 3: Source: SAP
Filter improvements and visualization improvements cover usability improvements
Now support view time undo and redo
Tool tip will follow your mouse
Figure 4: Source: SAP
New rendering experience
Filtering can be slow today
Active viewport rendering – all other objects will be paused until bring to active viewport
Figure 5: Source: SAP
Optimized view mode will not solve all performance challenges, but will solve some client side performance challenges
Figure 6: Source: SAP
Dashboard had client side performance side challenges
Performance improvements depend on complexity of dashboard
Need edit rights for optimized view mode
Figure 7: Source: SAP
Available in 2021.14
Models: planning enabled models not supported
Figure 8: Source: SAP
Provide incremental updates
Custom sort, multiple browser support, zero suppression support
Figure 9: Source: SAP
4 categories of unsupported features

Hover tool tip why not working shown in above right
Figure 11: Source: SAP
Hierarchies will load incrementally (all data sources)
Some performance improvements differ based on data source
For live BW, improvements in caching, reduce amount of round trips between client and server
Figure 12: Source: SAP
Where improvements help you – persist information, each of the widgets
Figure 13: Source: SAP
Will no longer retrieve model information as open story, to improve story opening time
Only download information when you need it
Figure 14: Source: SAP
Recommended to be on latest BW patches – stay as up to date as you can, SAP recommends
Linked analysis with complex filters – requires BW 7.5 SP16
Install SAP notes above

Optimized view mode (wave 14) improves usability and performance in certain cases – loading indicator, visual experience
Addresses client side performance challenges
Question and Answer
Q: Does it make sense for me to switch all my stories to optimized view mode, even if I don’t expect performance improvements?
A: Start with the most used/critical stories, to see if compliant, will get usability improvements
See how compliant how story is
Q: Active view port rendering – only load content visible to viewer, all content paused, when beneficial to use active view port rendering?
A: Loads in browser window, and everything fits on screen, may not see difference
Most stories have information further down and have to scroll down
Then beneficial for active viewport rendering – only updates widgets you see
Still value in classic rendering – presentation style, and no filter changes, scroll down – classic rendering will have loaded everything
Designer can choose default rendering experience; viewer can override on a per session basis
Q: Active viewport work with canvas and responsive?
A: Works on both page types
Q: Optimized table – go back and update?
A: Not automatically move over
Optimized table – scrolling behavior
Today you have to go on each table and enable it
